Your message sounded so much like myself that I had to write, although I'm afraid I can't offer much in the way of professional advice. I am a Licensed Social Worker, writer and grad student in mental health counseling.
I too would like to combine the creative arts with my career in counseling, but am unsure of how to do so. I considered majoring in expressive arts therapy, but was told by many professionals that I would be more employable if I got my degree in counseling or social work (because of third-party insurance) so that is the route I have taken.
I plan to continue my own creative pursuits while in graduate school as well as getting a certificate in Journal Therapy so that I can incorporate that into my work as soon as possible. I would love to talk with you more about this and possibly share our experiences with one other. If this sounds good to you feel free to e-mail me at booklover4@ivillage.com
I would also like to ask anyone on this list for their advice and/or comments about using the creative arts in their counseling practice and how realistic it is for me to "dream" of someday opening my own counseling center/art studio offering both the traditional talk therapy as well as the various creative therapies. What qualifications would I need before I could actually do something like this?
Thanks,
S.Jones
