There are actually two different concepts to the creative arts in therapy or creative arts therapies. One concept defines the creative tx's as separate disciplines; that is, music, art, drama, poetry, dance/movement therapies. A creative arts therapist might be an art therapist who also uses music therapy and dance therapy techniques in her/his practice, but generally an art therapist, music therapist, etc. is primarily involved in one area of the arts and has had training in only one area. The second concept is called intermodal or expressive arts therapies. This type of therapist may hold an art therapy credential for example, but is also trained in using multiple creative arts in treatment. For example, I am a Registered Expressive Arts Therapist (in addition to my art therapy credential) and have had training in using multiple modalities in therapy. For example, I might combine art and poetry in a session, or use art and creative movement together if that seemed appropriate for the person I am working with. An excellent book on this approach is MINSTRELS OF THE SOUL, by Paolo Knill et al. Also, look into Samuel Gladding's COUNSELING AS AN ART, and Natalie Rogers' EXPRESSIVE ARTS THERAPY (I think that is the correct title, look for it on Amazon or Barnes & Noble).
