I am a layperson, the victim of awful things. Re sympathy for the abuser, might I point out I assisted a violent man to overcome the bulk of his abusiveness (while he was safely behind bars), for no other reason than though he hadn't shared all of his "shame" I was the only one close enough to kindly "call him on his stuff". It has been years, but a distant friend noted one day had the abuser not been assisted, he would have been a walking time bomb for another person to be victimized by. The court sentenced him to 36 years, he was out in 4. (honest i have a faded newsclipping). As a victim anyperson dealing with me, had to give me the safety of no sympathy for the abuser. I had to have that to protect me. Still, prisons won't protect us from walking time bombs. Better to have them diffused. So, I guess I agree..with both sides of the coin. -no training, just real live experiences.
