Since each affect is an analogue of its stimulus, and shame is a response to an impediment to positive affect, then shame is triggered by an impediment and when triggered is an amplified impediment. All affects, since their contour is the same as what triggers them, are competent stimuli for more of the same affect. That is what Janet is talking about in the post above yours---until and unless we acknowledge that an affect is going on, it continues to trigger more of itself. Tomkins and I have written about this as an internal contagion analogous to the affective resonance we see in primitive empathy.
