I wholeheartedly agree with the suggestion to read "Shame and Pride...", but a word of caution about SSRI mediations. IMHO, these drugs may presently be overprescribed. No doubt they are effective in treating depression, most of which, I believe, is shame based, but they are not without side effects and other limitations. I prefer to look at them as a "bridge" that can help patients cross from isolation into healthier relationships. Ultimately, shame is about rupture of relationship and must be repaired through relationship building.... so therapy is important. (warning- my perspective is one of a family physician with a special interest in addiction and behavioral health, not that of a psychologist or psychiatrist).
