Perhaps Dr. Stein could best respond to this. But in my understanding of Adler, purpose or "movement" is one of his core principles. With this in mind, the tension or desire to move towards a goal brings a focus of attention on the desired objective and employs more or less common sense thinking and useful behavior in moving towards the desired end. Stay sharp!
Secondly, in more general psychological terms, there is the concept of an optimum level of tension or anxiety. Too little, and either boredom or even lack of conscious awareness replace focus; too much and "flooding" or confusion overwhelms attention and focus is lost. Perhaps you should hop over to Nathanson's forum and get a sense of his ideas about affect.
