If you are only looking at behavior, the diagnostic label of ADD does describe symptoms that some people share some of the time. However, there is no distinction related to the circumstances under which the individual's symptoms appear and disappear. There are some children who do not concentrate at school, but do so easily in games and entertainment that interests them. The social results of their symptoms are the most interesting--what do the adults do and feel when the child exhibits his symptoms? What responsibilities or tests is he able to avoid?
