The concept of trauma necesarily precludes a life changing result as its consequences. However, in cases of spontaneous remission where the individual is abusing substances, and possibly addicted, the consequence of a trauma might initiate spontaneous remission. This is also referred to as natural remission. For instance, there are cases where alcoholics and drug addicted individuals experienced severe emotional trauma from auto accidents or personal injury and made the life adjustment to discontinue drinking or using psychoactive substances. My work with incarcerates does not often hold this theory true, but it does exist. Unfortunately, the individual may discontinue the useof psychoactive substances while replacing it with another compulsive type of behavior that is less harmful -running!
I suggest you research journals on this topic since they are plentiful.
