From an Adlerian perspective, trauma may stimulate behavioral change (stopping drug use), but a change in the underlying style of life and fictional final goal usually requires therapeutic insight and encouragement. Without this deeper work, the individual may simply find different (less costly) strategies to achieve the same uncooperative goals. Read "Classical Adlerian Theory and Practice" at http://go.ourworld.nu/hstein/theoprac.htm for a description of these Adlerian personality constructs.
