My view is that the Code must be revised in such a way as to further protect us, not further hurt us. I believe that the Code has, for many years, bent over backwards to protect consumers from us. Now it's time to add a little balance back into the Code and make it protect us from litigious consumers and their attorneys. If Thomas wants the above, as quoted, then my opinion is that if a therapist can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. There are plenty of professions out there that are more profitable than the psychotherapy biz. If a therapist wishes to lower the professional standards of mental health practitioners, what does that tell the consumer about the quality of mental health care in the US, and about how therapists view their own profession? I agree, lets lower the standards. If psychologists and social workers choose to do so, however, then ALSO lower what therapists are allowed to bill per clinical hour, in a degree that fairly matches the percentage of the degraded quality of mental health care that would result, and have THAT written into the code, along with price controls as to how much mental health workers are allowed to charge clients, AND require therapists to inform new clients exactly how much quality of service has been downgraded as a result of lowering professional standards, AND provide a complete copy of the APA code of ethics to the client on the first visit. Thomas states that the Code is slanted toward putting therapists out of business. If that is his concern, then I suggest to Mr. Thomas and other psychologists on his boat, that he find another profession in which he does not have these unwarranted fears. I ask anyone reading this, would you, if undergoing heart surgery, wish that when your time comes to be on the slab to under go the knife, that a couple of years before, the heart surgeon is now held to a LOWER STANDARD? And if psychologists and social workers feel that their profession is any less important than the medical profession and that standards should be lower, I think I will visit a fortune teller instead of a licensed therapist, to discuss my marriage, since I would perceive that the two treatment modalities about equal at that point.
