Meditation is safe. Try lots of different types of meditation and several groups. Like anything, it takes a while to find the right fit. You might enjoy one type of meditation more than another. You may like one teacher more than another. I think that it's safe to say that it will take a long time to even come close to anyone state of mind that might frighten you in meditation. By then, it would probably seem like a great experience. As for the belief systems in meditation, you can enjoy them, and learn from them, or ignore them. So, you can probably find some that are completely void of any religious content, which would be consistant with your belief system, but I would say that you might find learning about different religious beliefs fun too and expansive too.
