I don't typically like using zazen for schizophrenia. However, those outpatients who have been adequately treated with anti-psychotics, and who are otherwise fairly functional seem to do o.k. with a routine of movement meditation (e.g. Tai Chi or active/non-forced Chi Kung) followed by a kind of active sitting meditaiton where one counts/feels six breaths at one's nose, then one's chest, then one's belly, then one's lower back, middle back, upper back. And then repeats this circle. It keeps the mind focused on real sensation. Eyes open is also a benefit, since it inhibits created visual imagery. But for most schizophrenics, and especially inpatients, I'd stick with the movement meditaiton.
