There are many different cognitive styles affecting responses to hypnosis. Some people are fundamentally more vigilant than others. Some mediate information in terms of images, or words, or else feelings. Some are more abstract, others more concrete. Don't expect arm levitation to occur for all persons, nor dissociation to the point of amnesia. It is not necessary for beneficial results. At the very least, consider self-hypnosis a state of relaxed focused attention to concerns you have - a kind of enhanced cognitive therapy. You can get some specific instruction from a hypnotherapist certified by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis. DO NOT seek advise from a stage hypnotist. They are NOT therapists, and for the most part are only interested in performance.
