Most researchers these days are emphasizing the HPA axis (hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal pathway) for understanding the way that stress affects health. Another way to approach it is to examine the influence of stress (or well-being) on cortisol which influences cytokines (such as interlukin, which is NOT a lymphocyte), which in turn influences lymphocytes such as natural killer cells and the way they function. Still another way is to examine the influence of stress on neurotransmitters, such as seratonin, epinephrine and dopamine, and their influence on mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and diseases like migraines, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, and other somatic complaints.
