Since dissociative disorders are fundamentally an uncontolled way of coping with extreme distress, I teach patients a controlled form of dissociation (meditation) so that they will be able to get a daily dissociative recuperation in a controlled fashion. The next time they encounter distress, they will be better able to cope with it.
