I am a clinical social worker who has just started seeing a client who was in a very serious car crash a year ago, the second in 7 years. It could easily have been fatal and it has left her with chronic pain from an injury to her shoulder which may leave her permanently disabled. Along with the physical pain and the inability to return to work yet, she is plagued by flashbacks of the events surrounding the accident and major depression, though that seems to be ameliorating somewhat. I have referred her to her MD for antidepressants which I understand can help to reduce flashbacks. However, it took 5 years for them to stop after the first accident and she doesn't want to be on meds for that long. She is very willing to try EMDR. Do you think it might be helpful? We live in Rhode Island and I'm not sure how to find a trained EMDR therapist in the area.
