Mystery of love and why it hurts so much!

why is it that love is such a strong aspect of life? 

and also, why is it that someone can fall in love and 
totally abandon friends he/she has had for years? why 
does love hurt so bad when it does not go as planned, 
in some cases it hurts more then seeing a family 

member pass away!!!!!!!!! why???????
