I recently bought copies of the IBM and Kurtzweil inexpensive (+/- $60) speech recognition systems. I found the IBM system understood my speech much more accurately than did the Kurtzweil. However, neither of them are close to being useful for dictating clinical charts. (I am the author of a clinical chart program being sold by MHS and hoped that the speech recognition software could be integrated into it. No such luck.) I have heard that the higher end systems ($500) are quite good but have not tried them. Lest you think me a spendthrift, let me say that I bought both systems at CompUSA with the intention of keeping the better of the two, if it worked acceptably well. As noted, it did not, so I returned both.
