A similar question has arisen for me in the group treatment of anxiety disorders. I have run a cognitive-behavioral groups for depression for a year and am presently doing the same for anxiety disorders. Though participant's symptoms begin to abate after sessions including psychoeducation re: anxiety disorders, relaxation, breathing, and cognitive strategies [exposure is next], I have the persistent feeling that the cognitive behavioral aspects alone are insufficient for long term treatment success. I have decided to restructure the group and add a support group component following the cognitive-bvehavioral for each session. The literature certainly affirms the efficacy of social support; and I wonder if this will enhance the treatment. Anyone else had these questions or have experiences to add?
