Amazing how fast the world turns and changes. Just a few months ago I started evaluating speech recognition software for an article in The National Psychologist. At that time I was ready to conclude that it was "Not Ready for Prime Time." Then Dragon Systems released Naturally Speaking which blew away the competition. The first continuous speech recognition system and now the masses could, for a hefty price, buy speech recognition. But it was a fairly hefty price (upwards of $300 for a single user system). But now IBM has released Via Voice and it can do the same continuous speech recognition for under $100. Undoubtedly it will not be long before we are talking to our computer and all our appliances. Beam me up Scotty!
