Ed, actually I do not see anxiety and depression as two sides of the same coin. I really see them as two separate entities which can at times co-exist but do not necessarily. In the Cognitive model of Aaron T. Beck, a person experiences anxiety when they perceive that they are in some type of danger. Depression, on the other hand, results when the person has a negative view of the self, their world and their future. Certainly, there are lots of people who are both depressed and anxious; but I also see lots of people who are anxious but not depressed and others who are depressed but not anxious.
