Jim,...Wow! You can really pack in a lot of issues into one posting! Well, lets face it we are "messing" with brain chemicals here. Science or more specifically psychopharmacology has succeeded in passing through the blood/brain barrier particularly with the SSRI'S. I am sensing that you are not confortable with that and I tentively agree. Chemically speaking I believe the attempt has used a variety of chemicals (serotenin sheath/muscle relaxers/pharmiceutical blockade (ie. reuptake) to accomplish this feat. Well, as you know it was merely a matter of time before this level of chemical intervention was reached. I really appreciate your struggle with the social and psychological implications of this "breakthrough". If I can take a pill to make me "happy" why bother with the complexities of human growth and development? Or. lets sidestep the questions of modern industrial/high tech society and become self satisfied with the use of chemicals. Boy. sounds an awful lot like the sixties and that misanthrope Timothy Leary (was he really Irish) and his retreat "tune in, turn on, drop out" ! I strongly respect your concern and I share your anxiety. ....Lets continue this dialogue.........................Ed.........................................PS, What would Vangogh had accomplished if his Doctor had prescribed Prozac for his recurrent bouts with depression..........What would Beethoven have accomplished if he were on Paxil in his twenties........
