Thank you for your interest in my research on marial relationships and for the suggestion of a related book. My Family Relationships Page and the marital inventory URL is http://www.unc.edu/~schaefer/index.htm
In view of your interest, I will describe the concepts embedded in the Marital Autonomy, Relatednes, and Intimacy Inventory. The original version, reported in Schaefer and Burnett, 1987 in my list of publications, included scales for Autonomy as contrasted to Control and Hostile Control as well as for Relatedness versus Hostile Detachment. A later version found a scale for Respecting Privacy correlates with Autonomy, Confiding correlates with Relatedness , and Withdrawal correlates with Hostile Detachment. Reports of Acceptance and Listening are correlated with both Autonomy and Relatedness. Greeley's book on Faithful Attraction; which includes questions on romance, sexuality and sensuality; suggested development of scales forthose concepts as well as for physical affection, verbal affection, and avoidance of sexuality. Thus the version on the net includes l8 scales with 4 items for each scale. In three weeks 7 people have provided data on their marriages. Each of the scales appears to have good variability and good reliability as indicated by similar responses to the items in the scale. I intend to add a scale on sexual demands of mate to complement sexual avoidance. Any ideas about how I might rapidly obtain a varied sample in order to do statistical analyses would be appreciated. My son, who developed the web page, has urged me to provide helpful advice to respondents and others. Have you any ideas how that might be achieved? My own intent was for use in initial research and evaluation.
Sincerely Earl S. Schaefer
