I've been a little surprised by some of the 'heat' my brief posts have generated. I think I have expressed myself too briefly and got subjected to being categorized (of all things!!). I am not a hard headed, hard science thinker or person. But I think the 'demon haunted world' Carl Sagan referred to in his book, happens because human beings do have a 'giant' propensity to get carried away with their language and metaphors, and our species is often a stones throw away(speaking of multiple meanings!!) from magic and superstition. Our brains are tremendously adept at finding wrong cause and effect relationships, and while science can hardly explain everything, it does help every once in a while to gather in one's thoughts, attempt to organize them and test them. This is cerainly not to say that all kinds of other cerebral explorations or cerebrations are a waste of time. I hate to think of how sterile the world would be, if all we did was to create control groups and did multiple regressions. And clearly the history of science shows that momentous progess often emerges from initial thoughts very much out of the mainstream (I think this has been pointed already. I'm just reiterating my awareness of this fact!).
Does Joseph Campbell's works on mythology interest this forum- esp the interviews Bill Moyers conducted with him?
By the way, I did in fact take great interest in the whole 'alien abduction' phenomenon, phone calling, writing and visiting a number of people who were writing books on such things. That can be talked about another time.
I've been busily reading all the posts in the forum, and obviously have a lot of catching up to do. I hope as I begin to take in more of this, I can make more of a contribution.
