You asked for "any reports on research findings in this field but even anecdotes would be appreciated." I've had a good bit of luck with this as well as related experiences, such as "throbbing" pain on the left side of the body, etc. I discovered on a few occassions that the heightened sensitive to listening was actually (accidently) sought by a few subjects for different reasons: maritial discord, lack of job praise, children gone from home, etc. It was as if the client yearned to hear something that was not forthcomming and that sensitivity to sound lead to hearing the ringing. I have asked them to regress to the first moment they recall hearing it and then relaxing the desire to hear what is not being said to them. This reducing of the sensitivity is sort of like turning down the volume on a blank tape...the background noise then becomes inaudibly low. Note: the "reason" for the heightened listening was seldom intended as literal "listening" by the client and learning what they did wish they could come to "hear" requires that the client participate (you can't just guess, of course).
