WlfWoman makes a very good point about how that "freedom to lurk" (observe) can be a refreshing experience in cyberspace. Lurking is a very comfortable position. The discomfort, I think, is at the other end... the person who posts something and receives no reply. Even though people may be reading the post, and thinking about it, and even agreeing with it, the poster can't see that. That creates an uncertainty that can be rather uncomfortable. "How come no one is replying to me!"
