I would posit that Erickson's remarkable abilities were the result of his understanding that the reality we typical function in is one of a myriad of realities that are possible. These realities are the result of experiences and their residual images, left in the form of thought. Erickson certainly did focus on accessing these associations and seemded to be better able to do it than most. Perhaps the experiences he had of being locked up in an iron lung contributed to his realization that the mind was not confined to the body. I wonder why there hasn't been much discussion on this. One reason, I think, is that the power that Erickson displayed is highly desired and very ego fulfilling. Now, many people are trying to emulate him to gain the same power. I would bet that Erickson did not try to gather followers and that he did not tell others the path to enlightenment, but rather encouraged people to be their own guru. Am I making too much of this?
