"Family Therapy" is an approach which sees the interconnectedness between people. It is not a particular technique. There are a great variety of interventions from behavioural to ethical. In contrast, traditional psychotherapy, which is based on the medical model, sees people as islands unto themselves and pathology as residing within, as opposed to between people. Family therapy cannot decline because it is a more effective and honest way of viewing the individual and providing solutions to their problems. Family Therapy may not be funded because of pressures from the insurance and/or medical community. But viewing the individual in context is here to stay, as are other recent societal accomplishments like efforts to curb smoking and environmental responsibility to name just a few recent advances in human consciousness.
