How I handled this experience in therapy
by Robert J. Smith, LCSW, NBCDCH, 2/14/99

I recently saw a couple where the husband did not trust his wife because of "past" sexual behaviors(prior to their relationship). The husband wanted me to hypnotize his wife to make sure that she was now telling him the truth. I at first did not want to do this. However, going with his wish and his wife's agreement, I told them that what comes out of the hypnosis will not necessarily be truth. It will be what the wife has to offer now in the present. I proceeded with hypnosis. The husband asked his wife questions while she was in trance having previously said the same thing out of trance. He felt more trusting of his wife after the hypnosis. I told him that none of this was fact, but information he could use to make up his own decision about his wife's honesty.
