If you have read the substance abuse chapter in my 1997 book "EMDR" you probably already know that for many people there appears to be a perceived life-threatening event that can keep contributing to relapses. Sometimes the event at the root is a childhood experience and not the obvious one causing pronounced PTSD. Processing this can help, as can using EMDR to work through the PTSD and relationship issues.
Just find a therapist fully trained and competent in EMDR who is also experienced with alcoholism. Stay open and responsive. The key is sincere commitment, focused treatment, and honest feedback on both sides. And remember, it's one step at a time.
