Dear Martha
I have participated in two EMDR sessions (3 meetings each) in the past 2 years. This process has helped me immensely! I have been under treatment for PTSD (caused by prolonged childhood trauma) for the past 10 years. In the last 5 years I have added stopping drinking, attending church, and stopping my sexual acting out. But the greatest relief I've felt from the PTSD symptoms and the alcohol obsession came after my EMDR sessions.
The PTSD relief came almost immediately after my sessions, but the alcohol obsessive relief came more gradually. Sometimes the old PTSD pangs or anxieties do arise again but the intensity is lacking and now I actually go weeks without any pangs. But the alcohol obsession has been totally removed! In fact I have even reintroduced a glass of wine back into an enjoyable evening out.
My therapist and I are now focusing on my sex relations, because even though I no longer act on them the obsessions still come at times. And seeing EMDR removed the alcohol obsession I believe it will work on this one also.
Good luck with your process, I hope my story helped.
p.s. As far as the PTSD symptoms go, my progress has been from a person who was fearful of leaving the house to today being a person who travels to Europe on business and even conducts presentations in front of 50 or more people. So keep the faith and try it!
