Take a look at the book EMDR (BasicBooks) by Shapiro & Forrest--pp. 191-200 in paperback and pp. 192-200 hardcover for possible applications to bipolar disorder. The emphasis would be upon reprocessing the experiential contributors to the present disorder or presenting complaint. The only negative feedback we have received regarding medications are the benzoes which appear to inhibit processing in selected cases. You can access the EMDR clinicians through the EMDR Institute at http://www.emdr.com. I suggest looking for an Insitute facilitator (staff member) who has had documented success experience.
