First, I am a mom of a 5 yr old. I have also been a nurse for over 10yrs. Many times anxiety goes along with depression. I think your son should be evaluated with someone you can trust. I would ask your pediatrician for advice. I do know alot about drugs. I worked in a Detox unit for 5yrs. I caution you on the other hand. Many psychiatrists tend to prescribe the wrong medications. I warn you about the addictive ones. All the minor tranquilizers and Ritalin are very addictive. The anti-depressants are safe. Tranquilizers are ok for only the acute episodes. Just don't take them on a consistent basis. Their only for short-term use only. That's about 10 days or less. Counseling may find out the root of your son's anxiety. This will help to along with medication if it is needed. Many counselors that are LCSW, Ph.D. or have a Masters Degree could help your son. They may even be able to screen your son for depression, and anxiety. I suggest you going to a counselor first. Your counselor could determine if your son needs medication. They could give you a referral. Good Luck.
