Sounds like the so-called "butterfly hug", a variant of bilateral stimulation. The BH was originally developed in Mexico to respond to the need for trauma relief there -- it was offered to groups of children who got some relief from their trauma experience. It has been exported now as a self-help technique for self-soothing between sessions or whenever. The technique is best first used when people have already had experience with formal EMDR, so it is known how people will respond.
