In general, when clients shut down during their emotional processing in EMDR they are likely to feel uncomfortable later because they've had one foot on the accelerator and one foot on the brake. That means that the first work should often be (I don't know whether this applies in your case obviously -- these are general comments) to target the fear of having an emotion in the first place -- are they afraid they'll be punished or what? And when was the first time they remember having that fear or being punished for having an emotion, as one example. Then the subsequent EMDRs go more smoothly. I don't see medication as being directly related to this, but it would not necessarily be contraindicated either. Please talk to your therapist about the above points to see if they apply to you or not.
