As a general rule, the only people that end up leaving an EMDR session feeling worse are those for whom the therapist neglected to screen for a dissociative disorder OR failed to closedown the session using an appropriate containment and closure strategy. Sometimes people need ego strengthening and installation of a safe place before first using the standard EMDR protocol. The best approach is to discuss all these things with the therapist and make sure the therapist is familiar with all these procedures. Also, depending on the phobia, there may be a need to use the phobia protocol or a process phobia protocol. All these things are part of EMDR training and are in Shapiro's book for professionals, now in its second edition. You may wish to read Shapiro and Forest's "EMDR: the break through therapy ... " available at amazon.com for example. Sandra Paulsen Inobe, PhD
