Remember, only people who are full-on DID have the "luxury" (and difficulty) of having the host be able to "sleep". The rest of us don't have the option of amnesia, and when we have tough work to do, we have to do it without walls. The best thing to do is to fractionate the work (another way to do fractioned abreaction) along some dimension or another, that is, either taking body sensations alone, or visual alone, or auditory, or cognitive. Some people fractionate best with imagery such as a control panel with a volume control and stop button, or a library in which they pull out and work on one chapter at a time. In any case there needs to be good closure between fractionated sessions of work. If a client is having trouble with containment between sessions or managing the intensity of the experience during an EMDR session, the client should bring it up with their therapist and see if there is another way to fractionate the work. In a DID client, if the host is already aware of the work, these other fractionation methods will likely help. Please consult your therapist to see whether and how the above applies in your case.
EMDR often takes down walls -- which is why we like to do it planfully.
