I have seen where EMDR was used and the patient re-blocked the whole entire session from memory. During the session, the patient was extremely anxious, afraid, and in the midst of re-living a traumatic event from childhood. There was absolutely no time for desentization of the trauma, because the therapist conducting the session was involved in keeping the patient from being retraumatized from the abreaction. I watched in amazement and concern for this patient because I believe it was not necessary to take her into a full level of abreaction. The therapist could have broken up the trauma and helped her to see on a piece of it. I think that retraumatization often occurs using EMDR without using a skilled therapist to conduct and monitor the session. The end results of the session were not only useless for the patient but also quite damaging.
