Either the EMDR session OR the client may seem "stuck" in a session. When the EMDR session itself gets stuck, or is "looping", there are special procedures that are used to get it unstuck. Some of these are taught in the Level II training of the EMDR Workshop, and some are more advanced (such as ego state interventions). Sometimes the client him/herself feels "stuck" in the session, which means that there may have needed to be more screening and/or preparation prior to the first EMDR. If the client is having trouble feeling oriented after a session, the therapist needs to make sure that the appropriate preparatory steps, such as an ego state approach, has laid the ground work ahead of the EMDR session, and that proper containment procedures are used at the end of the session so the client is oriented before leaving the office. Note that the above are general principles only, and may not apply in particular cases. If you are an EMDR client with this experience, you need to address it with your therapist. You may wish to bring this page into the therapy session as well.
