I also read the description at TWHJ of EMDR and it does a great job of telling what EMDR is about. I believe there were a number of other links connected to that fourum and I found them to be very helpful as well. BEFORE we began the EMDR we did some work on a safe place and other coping skills. This really helped a lot. I hope this answered your question. Post more at TWHJ. There are many of "us" there that can help you understand EMDR from our personal experiances.
I just had my first few sessions and in short I found it to be very helpful. My therapist used a light bar. I was directed to follow the light from right to left as I recalled an incident. The light would move about 80-100 times , he called this a set, and then he'd ask me what came up, where do I feel that in my body, and then begin a new set using that new information to process the memory. The experiance was very powerful! I think it is still a bit to early to know if this is a lassting solution, but I do feel good about the incident we used as a target. Not good as in happy, but I can now talk to him about the incident and not go into a full blown panic attack.
He ended the 2 hour session with a relaxation exersize and we set up a phone contact for inbetween sessions as the processing continues after the session is over with.
