Licensed mental health professionals who take the EMDR trainings from the EMDR Institute or other bodies (sanctioned by the Institute) may call themselves trained, but not certified. Certification comes to those who are not only trained, but who have met the certification criteria of the EMDR International Association (www.emdria.org). That includes getting supervision after the training, and getting sufficient experience with the procedure. The highest level of certification is the EMDR Certified Consultant. The EMDR Institute is at www.emdr.com. The EMDR International Association is at www.emdria.org. All EMDR training provides at very beginning level exposure to the need for dissociation screening. Level II training includes an offering of a specialty presentation on EMDR with dissociative disorders. This is relatively brief. EMDR certification does not address dissociation training. There are a few people who specialize in using EMDR with dissociative individuals, but there is no certification for it. Careful interviewing, asking about years of experience with dissociation, or what protocol one uses is helpful. Membership in the International Society for the Study of Dissociation is a good sign (www.issd.org). Sometimes EMDR Institute or EMDRIA knows which practitioners work with dissociative disorders in your area. Good luck.
