It is only rarely appropriate to encourage clients to use eye movements for themselves. This should only be done when the clients have done a major portion of their difficult work, in my opinion. There is no controlled research available on this subject, but generally we are cautious because some people have undiagnosed conditions (such as PTSD or dissociative disorders -- not saying you do) that could be aggravated by self-administered quasi-EMDR.
