You'll find prior posts on this subject in the archives, as well as earlier in this relaunched forum. In a nutshell, it is a matter of personal preference of the client as well as the clinician. The controlled studies that exist have used eye movements. I use a combination of eye movements and sound. We don't know the scientific answer to your question, but the working hypothesis of most EMDR practitioners is that the point is to use bilateral stimulation of any kind.
