I have set up an appointment with a therapist that I got from emdria.org, and I asked him over the phone what his counseling theory is, and he said cognitive behavioral and that he also uses exposure techniques along with using EMDR. I have read a lot of posts on this site about exposure therapy vs. emdr, and I am confused. Are these things not usually used together or are they theoretically opposed? I am very nervous about seeing a new therapist and I am trying to figure out as much as I can quickly about if I should find a different one. I do not really like the cognitive behavioral theory, I would much rather focus on the emotions than on my thoughts and don't understand how you can make yourself think something without changing the way you feel first. And if this is something that doesn't go very well with EMDR then maybe I should keep looking for another therapist.
