I have only used the method where my T moved her fingers in front of my eyes. BUT I understand that the tapping also produces the same affect.... I understand that the therapist taps the left then right hand, or knee, and that right left stimulation is what activates the EMDR processing. I also know that some clients hold two "paddles" that do the tapping so there is no physical contact between the therapist and client. The same right left stimulations are also achieved with sound, where the client wears a headset and right left sound in the ears activates the EMDR process. Another therapist I had and did EMDR with also used the finger movement, and was on a research team. The team used all three methods and found there was no significant difference in what method was used. (Pitman et al). Another version of the eye stimulations uses a light bar, This site by SEAOX- AIR Medical has good articles re: EMDR Good Luck… I am a great fan of EMDR. It has been very helpful for me in dealing with my depression and PTSD related to early childhood abuse.

Personally I do not think I would be comfortable with the tapping, and think the sounds would interfere in MY processing, as sounds tend to irritate me. What method does your Therapist use? I am seeing a new therapist and we are going to be using EMDR (once I get to know him better). He is open to using whatever method I AM COMFORTABLE WITH.
