I am currently reading the book by Francine Shapiro, which seems to suggest that the purpose of EMDR is to reduce the level of distress associated with traumatic memories. I have also heard from anecdotal stories that EMDR can help reassociate sterile emotionless memories with their appropriate feelings. Since I use dissociation as a defense pretty regularly, I generally strip my memories of their emotions before storing them. EMDR to reduce the level of distress about any given memory wouldn't do me a whole lot of good. Is it reasonable to expect EMDR to help a person reconnect to their emotions? And if so, how does it manage to do both?
