    How EMDR Works

As others have stated, I understand this is a forum primarily designed for clinicians, however, I have a very critical question I seek an answer to.

I am considering EMDR with my current therapist, who I trust very much. I am reluctant to do this as I find anything I am not 100% in control of to be scary! My therapist believes I would benefit tremendously from EMDR, as does a friend of mine who has gone through it.

My question, which may seem silly, but I cannot get an answer to that satisfies me completely is this: Just HOW does EMDR work? I always get answers like, "you follow a finger back and forth", or, "it can be done through a series of tappings", etc... but this does not answer my question.

So I follow a finger back and forth... what else is happening at that time?

I appreciate any and all input.
