As for DID and it's controversiality... I tend to think it was controversial long before the 1980's. I suspect the reason why it is controversial is very much sociopolitical.

We, as a society, do not fully acknowledge the abuse of women and children. Thus we cannot acknowledge the consequences of said trauma.

I recommend Judith Hermann and Susan Brownmiller for wonderfully eloquent books on these matters.
