If beliefs and feelings about one's self (you're stupid, you'll never learn, you're worthless, etc) have contributed to deficiencies in learning, then EMDR might be able to "shift" those beliefs and change patterns of (not) learning. Trauma and mistreatment (maternal alchoholism) can cause such deficiencies, but it is often difficult to sort out what is caused by trauma and what is caused by the toxic dynamics which exist in families which predispose the occurance of such trauma and/or neglect. For instance, does a person have difficulties because they were beaten or are FAS... Or because they grew up in proximity to caretakers with poor boundaries, impulse control and a lack of attunement and insight?
