Recently I committed to doing a year of metta (lovingkindness prayers/meditation directed to self and others) for a year. Almost immediately, I found myself triggered by phrases like "be happy" or "be at peace". Too high a standard. I pared it down to "May I be safe, May I be at ease". That works really well. Incidentally, I've combined the two phrases with em's... which is grounding and stabilizing... an example of bls being containing... although (re: previous discussion) I've never quite figured out why sometimes bls is associative and sometimes not. I wonder if containment is also a form of association... but an installed association to a safe place? Creating a new neural network or some such? Re: godtalk, I had a friend who was frightened by the image her church friends suggested to her as "comforting" -- god holding her. I suggested she imagine god being present in whatever way she felt safe and supported -- immediately she saw him sitting a bit apart from her, and not touching her. It was very empowering and peaceful imagery for her. Sometimes words like "god" trigger us because we are buying into someone else's (mis)representation of the image. We can choose to create and attach to our own images. We can choose the light. May all be safe. May all be at ease. May all be happy. :-)
